In 2005, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned that the antidepressant Paxil had been linked to an increased risk of birth defects and asked GlaxoSmithKline to modify the drug's labeling to reflect this risk. The Paxil birth defect risk is especially high if an expectant mother took Paxil during the first trimester of pregnancy.
Paxil and Birth Defects
At Weinstein Law, our Paxil attorneys are currently representing families of children who have suffered birth defects caused by the mother's use of Paxil (Paroxetine) while pregnant. The following injuries or side effects in infants have been associated with the prenatal use of Paxil:
- Heart defects such as atrial and ventricular septal defects, hypoplastic left heart syndrome, tricuspid atresia and pulmonary stenosis
- Club foot
- Craniosynostosis
- Limb reduction
- Neural tube defects
- Omphalocele — a birth defect in which variable abdominal contents remain outside of the abdomen
- Lung function problems such as persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN)
- Severe withdrawal symptoms related to late stage pregnancy exposure
If you or a child you know was the victim of Paxil side effects, we urge you to contact one of our Paxil injury lawyers as soon as possible.
