The DePuy Hip Implant Recall
The DePuy voluntary recall involves two specific hip implants manufactured by DePuy Orthopedics, a unit of Johnson & Johnson:
- The ASR XL Acetabular System (a hip socket used in traditional hip replacement — available worldwide)
- The ASR Hip Resurfacing System (a partial hip replacement that involves a placement of a metal cap on the ball of the femur — approved for use only outside the United States)
Reported injuries include, but are not limited to, hardware failure, metallosis, necrosis and elevated levels of cobalt and chromium in the blood.
The FDA has received hundreds of complaints regarding the early failure of the DePuy metal hip implants.
People with the implants have needed second surgeries and have suffered from significant pain, infections, hip dislocation, metal allergies, and tumors and other complications related to metal particles.
